January/February 2011 This I Believe
Master Any Goal

by Deborah Koan

You can attain your goals. Here’s a simple goal setting technique that uses goal cards and meditation.

On one side of an index card, write your goal. Below that, write a small description of your goal. Keep it short and to the point. On the other side of the card, write a few steps that you can take this week to reach your goal. Writing your goal on a goal card is taking a thought (your goal) and putting it into action (the steps). Taking action is how you master your goal. With practice, this becomes second nature.

Now start your meditation as you normally would. When you feel calm and relaxed, pick up one of your goal cards. Look at the side that describes your goal. Read it. Now close your eyes and picture your goal. How does your goal look? How does it sound? What does it feel like to achieve your goal? See yourself accomplishing your goal, just as you’ve written it on your goal card. Make sure your body stays relaxed through this process.

When you feel ready, turn the card over and read what you have written on the other side, your steps for the week. Close your eyes and picture the first step only. See yourself completing it free of stress. Each week, complete a new step. You can master any goal.
