Little Monster in Me
by Robin Kaplan
If you're wondering about the wide variety of art styles that Robin Kaplan produces, it may be that she’s expressing her inner gorgonist — a multi-headed art monster with a different brain for each art style. Binding them all together is Kaplan’s love of storytelling, an inclination toward bold mixed-media digital work, and a fascination with all things speculative and monstrous (as shown by her illustration Yellow Monster on the cover of New Connexion).
Kaplan works on the award-winning show Mrs. P.com, illustrating the classic children’s stories read by Mrs. P, who is played by the inimitable Kathy Kinney, best known as Mimi from The Drew Carey Show.
“I create because I love how really good children's books constantly inspire a renewed sense of wonder. For children, everything is new and these experiences shape their picture of the world — chiseling away at the belief that the world is a painfully logical place,” says Kaplan, who just published her first children’s book, The Last Keyhole, and will be designing an upcoming book for Mrs. P.com. “For children, the world is never mundane — it’s always full of secrets and adventures.”
