Dave's Killer Bread Feeds the Soul

Dave Dahl grew up making breads with his parents, the founders of Portland's 50-year-old NatureBake - one of the nation's first natural whole grain bakeries. But Dave's life took a dark turn - drug use and theft led to prison sentences during his 20s and 30s.

During his last stint in prison, Dave got help from the prison psychologist to turn his life around. He began to play guitar again, take computer courses and dream about a new future - one filled with bread.

"The concept of 'drug free' breads came to me while I was in prison cleaning up my own act after a life of poor choices," says Dave, who with help from his brother Glenn, started Dave's Killer Bread. "I'll never know how Glenn was able to forgive me, but he did. When I was released early in December 2004 after completing a rehab program, I threw myself into creating these breads."

Dave's Killer Breads are USDA certified organic and made from all natural ingredients. Dave has come up with nine varieties of bread, including Blues Bread with blue cornmeal, rolled oats and seeds, Rockin' Rye with caraway seeds and molasses-rich cracked rye dough, and Nuts & Grains with a blend of walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts and cashews.

"I've lived a hard life, but my past is an essential ingredient in every loaf of Dave's Killer Bread," says Dave, whose bread can be found at stores throughout the Portland metro area, Eugene, Salem, Vancouver and soon in Seattle.
