More than 70 percent of Americans own a cell phone and depend on wireless technology, but very few people are aware of the effects of electromagnetic radiation emitted by these electronic devices.
Recent studies have suggested there might be a link between heavy mobile phone use and certain types of cancer in the brain and eyes, as well as potentially decreasing male fertility.
Dr. George Carlo, a public health scientist and founder of the Science and Public Policy Institute, headed a $28.5 million research program funded by the cell phone industry from 1993 to 1999. Through lab experiments, he found evidence that seemed to link cell phones to cancer, showing genetic damage in human blood cells exposed to cell phone radiation.
"Emerging science shows links to conditions ranging from learning and spectrum disorders to cancer," says Carlo on the Safe Wireless Initiative website at www.safewireless.org.
A study reported in the Journal of Sleep Research found that 30 minutes exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from cell phones caused changes to brain activity.
Tests conducted by BIOPRO Technology found that when exposed to EMFs from a cell phone, the body's energy level is pushed into unhealthy ranges and a significant stress response can be observed within minutes of phone use. After only a five-minute phone call, it can take the body approximately 30 minutes to recover from the harmful effects of EMFs.
By adding special chips to cell phones, BIOPRO Technology found that the body's stress response is avoided.
