Healing through the Sounds of the Seasons
by Terres Unsoeld
“Playing music is no longer good enough,” according to Fabian Maman, an international vibrational sound healer. “We need to be conscious. We need to play music in a way that ensures that human beings, nature and the cosmos can come into healing harmony.”
As a musician, Maman is aware of the interaction between the music and the energy or Chi of the audience. On a tour in Germany, he felt people’s souls responding to the music. Later while studying acupuncture, Maman realized that it was the key and mode of the season that struck such a deep chord in the audience.
As the founder of Tama-Do, The Academy of Sound, Color and Movement, Maman researched ancient classical acupuncture texts that linked five musical notes with the five elements of nature: wood (A), fire (C), earth (F), metal (G) and water (D). He searched throughout China for teachers who used this season and musical note system, but found none. Independently, Maman spent years of research confirming that these five notes did indeed resonate with the energetic qualities of the seasons.
Later he transposed Indian ragas and ancient modes based on pentatonic and Byzantine scales to the key of each season. These five notes per mode, per season became the foundation for his harmonizing concerts.
Maman also discovered the 12 notes for the 12 organs and acupuncture meridians, as well as musical correspondences for the chakras, subtle body command points and others. Overall, he spent nearly 30 years researching and creating more than 30 techniques using sound, color and movement to balance body, mind and spirit in the subtle energy fields.
“You don’t have to be a professional to play a therapy concert. We’ve done the work for you,” Maman says. “You just have to be creative and improvise on the five notes–with the right touch.”
Maman uses only acoustic instruments in his concerts because the pure overtones resonate fully with the human body and energy fields. He created a seven-foot tall pyramid of sound, tuned to the pentatonic modes of the season, to open each concert. Special Chi movements are used to enhance the energy of the room. Color scarves help to call in the consciousness of the colors of the season while two stars secure the link between earth and sky.
Musicians, singers and dancers play together in a grand holistic symphony. The integration of elements are designed not only to harmonize the audience and performers within their own DNA, acupuncture meridians, organs, chakras and energy fields, but also to harmonize within the greater expanding spiral of nature, the season, the stars and the community.
“You feel the harmony, the Chi, the color in the moment,” Maman says. “You’re flying between heaven and earth. Your heart, your emotion, your spirit, your psyche is free to express in a delightful garden of the new energy field for the time to come.”
In 1988, Fabien Maman founded Tama-Do, the Academy of Sound, Color and Movement, as a research, teaching and artistic service for the evolution of consciousness.
