Children Rock The Earth

by Jan Mahloch

Who hasn’t experienced watching a child pick up a rock and put it in their pocket? You have probably seen this occur hundreds of times and never given it a passing thought. Yet, this simple act is important because you have just witnessed a child who is using their intuitive sense to connect and ground their energy to the earth. Children love to gather rocks and toss them into a stream. What seems like only a big wet splash is in fact a way to relieve tension and stressful energy from their bodies. Imagine a sunny day by a river or a creek, hundreds of rocks to choose from all waiting for a child to come along and reposition them in another part of the earth. Children know that they are the stewards of the earth and in their carefree and interactive ways with nature they are constantly rebalancing the earth and themselves by these displays.

Earth treasures like minerals and crystals are not just for our consumption as resources, currency and cosmetic jewelry. They also carry and transmit energy that can help us center, ground and awaken ourselves to the world within us. In this modern day world of computers and video games, children are increasingly choosing technology instead of the natural pleasures of the outdoors. Children are losing the benefits of their natural connection to support and clear their energy. It is important to foster a child’s connection to nature through time spent in parks, playgrounds and with treasures from the earth.

Assist your child’s connection by taking inventory of your child’s likes and dislikes when it comes to the outdoors. Ask your child for suggestions of activities and places that help them feel their connection to the earth. For example, reading some books outside, throwing stones in a creek or a trip to their favorite beach can restore and refresh their energy. As children move to school age they are naturally drawn to collecting favorite items and materials. Bring the outdoors in by encouraging a rock collection. Take them to a crystal/mineral store and help them start a collection by allowing them to wander the store and chose what they are drawn to. Read to them out of the various crystal/mineral books about the significance of what they have chosen. This information can guide parents to what energy can best benefit and support their child. For instance, many creative and active children will chose a stone like Agate as it acts to ground the intuitive energy these children are processing.

Children of today possess a great sixth sense so they usually have little need for stones or crystals that open up their intuition. Instead they need stones that help them become more comfortable with using their five senses and will connect them to the earth. Boys are naturally drawn to hematite, a shiny black stone that emits energy for mental concentration, focus and protection. A good choice for pre-teen girls who are experiencing puberty is Rose Quartz, which gives the energy of self-love and reassurance. Children that are stressed or irritated due to exposure to the chaotic energy from school or other individuals can benefit from Ocean Picture Stone. Holding this soothing green stone feels like the calmness of walking on a beach and quickly drains away anger or annoyance. Try these stones or explore for yourself the world of minerals and crystals. Use your own intuition when choosing, as it knows what is best for your energetic self.

Take note the next time you see a child throw a rock in a stream. Ask yourself are you taking time to ground and center yourself to the earth? As you travel down your wisdom path, remember that rocks are much more than child’s play. They are the reminders that we all are the stewards of the earth and there is great purpose in our connection to nature. Treat yourself to a barefoot walk in the park today. Better yet, walk with a child through the grass and experience their playful path of wisdom.
