Ask a Medical Intuitive

by Caroline Sutherland

Dear Caroline,

In 1992, I gave birth to a Downs Syndrome baby boy. Ty is now 12 years old. Life for our family has presented unbelievable challenges and tests as well as abundant blessings. Physically he has had countless medical problems. It was discovered that he was deaf for his first year because of blocked Eustachian tubes!

We have done everything possible to help Ty integrate into the main stream. He has speech therapy classes, a battery of tutors plus a full time teacher's aide.

When he turns 16, he is scheduled to attend a vocational training program, preparing him to be independent when he graduates high school. Ty can be loving and sweet at times and appears almost normal in his ability to focus and cooperate. But other times without warning, he can be difficult, stubborn, and removed.

I know that Ty is "in there" somewhere. Can medical intuition offer another perspective?

Dear Lisa,

Your life took an unexpected turn when Ty was born but your dedication to his wellness obviously represents enormous soul growth for both of you. Caring for any child who is challenged has my utmost admiration. As parents, I believe that we participate in many karmic contracts which we work out through our relationships with our spouses, significant others, children and family members. These can be huge tests.

I acknowledge you for all that you are doing to open as many doors as possible for Ty.

Now let's take a look at the physical. Your letter gave me an important clue - that he was deaf for the first year of his life. I suspect that he was and still is sensitive/allergic to milk. Sensitivities to milk, and dairy products made from milk, can contribute to ear, nose and throat problems as well as irritability, lethargy and behavior problems. Try removing these items from his diet and notice a difference.

You have probably removed sugar from his diet but have you considered that fruit juice could be contributing to his sugar load and possible behavior fluctuations - yes it is possible!

In a child who is reactive and sensitive, I suggest you consider exposures to chemicals and food additives which most processed foods contain.

I have worked with thousands of children over the years with miraculous results. When we balance the physical there is a better chance for symptoms and behaviors to improve.

Ty is no exception. Why go to all the trouble and expense of doing the social and emotional integration without going all out on this important physical piece. There is an example in my book "The Body Knows" of working successfully with an autistic boy following similar suggestions.

You are right. I too believe that Ty is "in there." Placing some strong focus on diet and nutrition should help to bring him out.
