January/February 2005 Alternative Health
Ready for a ParadigmShift?
by Pauline Baumann, ND
100 years ago Quantum physics was new. But it's just recently that
the significance of this branch of physics has captured the imaginations
of everyone from organizational consultants to healthcare practitioners
to filmmakers. "What the %&#! Do We Know?", is an independent
film shot in Portland, featuring quantum physicists as the stars. It
showed for eight months to full houses before sweeping the country as
an underground hit.
Quantum Physics and Medicine - Shifting the Paradigm
Home to a rich variety of approaches to medicine and healing, Portland
is spearheading the dialog between this New Science and Medicine with
ParadigmShift, a symposium on February 26-27, 2005. Sponsored
by OneMedicine Institute, the Helfgott Research Institute and the National
College of Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM), ParadigmShift is an
opportunity for learning, inspiration and conversation about the implications
of new science in medicine and healing. It is an annual symposium of
leaders in the fields of quantum physics and other new sciences, energy
medicine and integral medicine. The purpose of the symposium is to create
dialog among physicians, faculty, students, patients and the public
in order to help us move into a new paradigm in medicine and healing,
one that honors each of us and the earth.
Not Your Mother's Medicine
Sincere critics who cite a "lack of scientific validation"
as a weakness of alternative medicine will be interested in attending
ParadigmShift. New scientific discoveries to be highlighted at
this symposium are providing a basis for understanding many hitherto
puzzling topics such as homeopathy, Chinese medicine, and nature cure
(Naturopathy). Holistic practices such as these cannot be reduced to
the simple mechanisms favored by Newtonian science. They operate in
the quantum world, and quantum physics, chaos theory, and complexity
science can provide the basis for designing relevant research. In other
words, the science is getting there, it's just not your mother's science.
Featured Speakers
Amit Goswami, PhD, is an OSU physicist, author of The
Self-Aware Universe and The Physics of Soul, and featured in
What the Bleep? Dr. Goswami will speak on the topic of his recent book,
The Quantum Doctor, which explores the implications of quantum
science in medicine, especially Ayurveda (traditional Indian medicine),
Acupuncture and homeopathy.
Fred Alan Wolf, PhD, one of the foremost interpreters of new
science, and author of Mind into Matter (and many other books)
is also featured in What the Bleep? Dr. Wolf will speak on his newest
book, The Yoga of Time Travel exploring the relationship between
quantum physics and the human ability to experience non-dual states.
Such non-dual states dissolve time, merging past, present and future
and facilitating spiritual growth and physical healing.
Leanna Standish, PhD, ND, Senior Researcher at Bastyr University
will present scientific evidence that supports the paradigm shift in
medicine including distant neural sensory investigations (DNSI), ultra-dilutional
biology, and other topics.
Jim Oschmann, PhD, (author of Energy Medicine: The Scientific
Basis and Energy Medicine in Health and Human Performance)
will reveal new research into the living matrix of cell and tissue structure
that includes biological semiconductors, tensegrity, and organized water
molecules. He will show how the living matrix stores emotional information
from trauma and how energy-healing techniques work, and the implications
for health and high performance athletes.
Wind Hughes, MS, MFCC will explore what it takes to become a
quantum practitioner: self-cultivation, presence, internal alignment,
the place of sound and ritual in an integral practice. She will bring
her "mother drum" and will work with the audience to experience
group alignment.
Internationally renowned faculty from Portland's National College of
Naturopathic Medicine will discuss natural medicine in an integral paradigm.
Dickson Thom, DDS, ND, Associate Professor of Naturopathic Medicine
will speak on naturopathic medicine and Heiner Fuehauf PhD, LAc,
Dean of the Classical Chinese Medicine Program will speak on ancient
medicine, and specifically Chinese medicine, as an integral paradigm.
Heather Zwickey, PhD, Director of the Helfgott Research Institute,
will discuss the structure of paradigm shifts as a phenomenon in the
history of science.
The program weaves together a variety of areas into a cohesive view
of the scientific foundations of energy medicine, consciousness and
integral medicine. Family-style on-site luncheons (included with registration)
encourage discussions and sharing among the participants. As a special
treat, the students of NCNM will host a special Saturday evening concert
and dance with the world beat spiritual music of Shimshai and friends.
ParadigmShift is co-sponsored by OneMedicine Institute, the
Helfgott Research Institute and NCNM to promote thoughtful dialog and
advances in the science of integral medicine. Join us for a weekend
of mind-bending reality, inspiration, integral inquiry and community.
