I Came to Make My Heart Feel Good

by Deborah Cross

In March an introductory meeting was held for the Star*Kids Summer Program, an interactive Spiritual program created for children ages 4-12 and their parents. The program participants are encouraged to look inside themselves for their own truth, and Universal Principles are used as a basis for experience. The atmosphere is accepting – something that is often hard to find for today’s child, who is often intuitive, remembers past lives, and generally lives in a world very different from their peers. Some of the subjects the program covers are Oneness, Honesty, Love, Fear, Intuition, Inner Guidance, Creativity, and All We Are is LOVE. A parent/child, support/play group for children ages 0-3 and their parents is also offered.

Driving to the meeting, five year old Ayden’s mother was having trouble finding the address. Three times they drove past a certain street and each time Ayden would point and insist that it was down "there". Finally, Ayden’s mother drove down the street he had pointed to and found the meeting place. When they related the story I asked him how he knew. He shrugged his little shoulders, looked me straight in the eye and said matter-of-factly, "I’m psychic". In this group, Ayden’s abilities are not all that unusual, and he does not stand out as being different. What is unusual is that children like Ayden feel safe in expressing themselves. One parent told of her daughter’s ability to heal herself at three. Another mother shared that her two year old knows instinctively what herbal remedy she needs to take when she is sick. A twelve year old said that she really wants to find friends who accept her, and that most of the time she would rather be with adults than children of her own age because she can speak freely about her spiritual beliefs.

During the meeting I asked the children and their parents to introduce themselves and to tell why they had come. Ayden, sitting to my left, was asked to speak first. He wrinkled his nose and said, "I don’t really know." I asked him to think about it, and we would come back to him. As we continued around the circle, some adults spoke at length as the children politely stifled yawns. Ayden listened to twelve others speak while he quietly awaited his turn. When it came his time to speak, he lifted a small innocent face, beamed a large smile at the group and said, "I came to make my heart feel good." I think everyone really came for that reason, but Ayden said it best.
