Care and Feeding of Our Chakra Systems

by Linda Quest

Considering the significance of this point in history, and our present unparalleled opportunity to impact the outcome of our collective future reality, it seems appropriate to take inventory of all the tools of awareness at our disposal and to make certain they’re in good working order.

Our primary energy awareness tool is the Chakra system, our body’s personal power-refinement plant, a whirlpool of moving energy that draws gross physical energy, associated with primal survival, from the earth and surrounding heavens, then purifies and distills it into highly refined spiritual energy that our bodies use to stimulate endocrine organs, which secrete hormones into the bloodstream and regulate our physiology, in turn, affecting our states of mind and emotion. This system acts as a conduit between the physical and spiritual realms, connecting us with the source of all life.

Each chakra pulsates at a different vibratory rate, the rhythm of the Root Chakra being slowest and the Crown Chakra’s vibration most rapid. As we grow and mature, we progress upward through the energy centers and the vibratory rate of our consciousness increases in direct proportion (i.e. infants react to the world through their root chakra). Like the eagle soaring high above, our experience at higher levels of consciousness offers visibility of a greater number of options than are generally observed at lower levels. Getting to know our own energy patterns by working with our chakras can help us learn more about who we are and the ideas and attitudes that shape our reality. We can become more intentional and more focused. We have opportunity to realize our talents and gifts and allow love and compassion to become central in our lives.

Proper functioning of our chakra system directly affects physical health, emotional balance, psychological development, and spiritual evolution, so its harmonious performance is key. In reaction to traumatic life events, we tend to get stuck from time to time in one energy center and have difficulty moving on, temporarily derailing our progression and causing painful energy blockages which manifest both physically and psychologically. We can all confirm the challenge of trying to be loving to one’s fellow man in the midst of our own physical pain, emotional torment, or spiritual despair – it’s all but impossible. Our chakra system can be an effective diagnostic tool for identifying and releasing energy blockages. With the chakras open, clear, and aligned, we not only have a more intimate link with the inspiration and power of Spirit and a stronger connection with our higher selves, but on a physical level, it’s much easier to view life from higher ground, to hold one’s self in high esteem, to participate in respectful, balanced relationships, and to embrace peace.

Healing our minds and bodies is the same as healing our energy. Recently, at a seminar I conducted, several participants in the group were medical professionals who had difficulty appreciating the need to be concerned with a person’s energy. How did the workings of unseen energy relate to a body’s physical health? Weren’t they separate things? I asked a clarifying question to address the issue: "What do you call a person whose energy body has separated from their physical body?" A nurse practitioner was the first to respond, "We call them dead."

Developing an intimate rapport with our own chakra system can lead us to deeper self-knowledge, self-trust, and a more solid connection with all that is. We can learn to better protect our physical health, to love and accept what makes us unique. I’ve learned that it takes the same amount of time, effort, and energy to develop and maintain a good relationship with myself as is required for friendship with anyone else. The same is true of our relationship with Spirit. Maintenance of our body’s energy system is a vital element of this strategy, precisely because it requires us to remain connected with ourselves and with Spirit.
