World Summit Ponders Earth’s Future
The World Summit on Sustainable Development, held August 26-September
4, in Johannesburg, South Africa, brought together world leaders, international
agencies, citizen groups, and others to address some of the most fundamental
problems facing humanity today. Among the issues discussed were reversing
the destruction of earth's basic ecological systems, building a world
both sustainable and secure, and elevating the status of women.
At the last Earth Summit (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), sustainable development
was put forward as an alternative to our current economic model. In
the ten years between Rio and Johannesburg, global consciousness about
sustainability increased while global environmental problems actually
worsened.
