Celebration of Amazing WomanAmazing World Day
In 1999 Marsh Engle became passionately aware of a vital need to reach
out to people and provide a catalyst for inspired action. As a result
of her dream she established a nationwide day that celebrates the strength
and courage of all women, all people. It is a day on which the individual
woman can honor herself and recognize those who inspire.
Last year Amazing WomanAmazing World Day was celebrated in ten
cities throughout the United States. This year the celebration has been
expanded to thirty cities including Portland, Oregon. A Congressional
Proclamation will recognize Amazing Woman-Amazing World Day when Gregory
W. Meeks, Member of Congress, reads it into the Congressional Record.
On March 9, 2002 Amazing WomanAmazing World Day will be celebrated
at Borders Bookstore, 708 SW Third Avenue, Portland Oregon, 97204, from
12-5 p.m. There will be a variety of inspirational speakers throughout
the afternoon including local author, Loren Slocum, author of No
Greater Love. All events are free of charge. Come hear Amazing Women
speak of their experiences.
The Our Voice Foundation which created Amazing Woman/ Amazing World
Day has partnered with Borders bookstore to benefit RAINN (Rape, Abuse
& Incest National Network). This is a nonprofit organization that
operates a national hotline for victims of sexual assault 24 hours a
day at 1-800-656-HOPE.
A percentage of the profits from books purchased will be donated
to RAINN. Visit their website for more information: www.rainn.org.
New at Common Ground:
Writing Classes Using "The Perception Approach"
Common Ground Wellness Center is offering a unique new set of on-site
writing courses through The Opening, a center for writing and growth
which focuses on the consciousness of the writer.
Their philosophy is that by strengthening your perception of the outer
world, the inner world responds to it and your writing automatically
becomes more powerful. Throughout, the priority is on exploring the
*experience* of writing. The Opening takes special care to welcome all
people who want to write, even those who do not considers themselves
"writers."
Courses meet both in the evenings and in the mornings, and some courses
have childcare provided for busy moms and dads who might not be able
to take a writing course otherwise. All courses meet for three hours,
once a week for eight weeks, and are open to every genre of writing.
New courses are offered throughout the Spring and Summer.
Not Far From Home is the core course of The Opening and focuses on
breaking the trance of the rational, planning mind and thinning the
barrier between the conscious and unconscious. It uses play with language,
freewriting, improvisational theater games, the Tarot, and active meditation.
Write Your Own Healing offers practical techniques to disentangle conflicting
voices, access subliminal wisdom, and bring the buried artifacts of
your life into the light of awareness. By freewriting, inviting inner
dialogs, and exploring the sensory world, use writing to find your way
home.
Scrimshaw Workshop on Stylistics For Practicing Writers. Find out how
to craft more shapely sentences and create solidity and cohesion in
your work. Discover new ways of revising, get more limber with words,
and expand your palette of stylistic choices.
Classes forming regularly. For information on class dates, times, and
costs, or to receive a free brochure call (503)282-2639 or email andy@theopening.org.
