September/October 1999 Spirituality
The Gandhi Society
The Gandhi Society meets the first Friday of every month in the 2nd
floor main lounge of PSU's Smith Center at 7 PM. The meeting is open
to anyone who is interested in learning more about Gandhi's principal
of Satyagraha (Hindi for "soul force") which emphasizes the
power of unadorned truth and love in social struggle and ahimsa, the
Sanskrit word for non-injury, or nonviolence. Call Professor Digambar
Misra (Kalki) for information at 284-8729.
Spiritual Leaders Committed to Ending Intimate Violence
Riane Eisler, author of The Chalice and The Blade and many
other books, has issued a challenge to spiritual leaders. A conference,
Creating Connections: How Our Spiritual Communities Can End Violence
Against Women & Children, was sponsored by Voices Set Free and
PSU's Women's Studies and Women's Community Education Project at PSU
on July 23 & 24. The ballroom was filled with women and a few brave
men.
Riane Eisler issued a call to invite spiritual leaders to be active
in a movement to end intimate violence in the 21st century.
Riane stated that although we are all spiritual leaders, name recognition
is important in giving credibility to a cause. Many people stepped up
to the carry the vision forward. The project is alive and thriving.
Several well-known and respected leaders have been contacted and have
expressed interest in supporting the efforts started here in Portland.
Interested people are invited to join the circle of cooperation and
support. The movement is spreading like wildfire across the U.S.

Community Connexion is Reaching out to Mainline Spiritual
Traditions
This is an opportunity for dialogue among faith groups. Each month
we will solicit responses from as many groups as possible on one or
more specific question.
Questions to ponder for the November/December, 1999 issue of Community
Connexion are:
What does your faith tradition teach you about the millenium?
What are your dreams for the millenium?
What are your fears about the millenium?
Are you doing anything special to prepare?
What is in store for you in the 21st century?
What is the fate of planet earth in the 21st century?
Is there way to create peace and harmony in the world?
Please take a few minutes and respond to these questions by e-mail
at mosaic2@gte.net, or by fax
at 503-925-8091. Check out the Community Connexion web page for
responses as they come in.
