What do abandoned tires, empty beer cans and used soda bottles have in common? They make up the bricks and mortar of renegade architect Michael Reynolds' energy-independent housing known as "earthships." In a race against global warming, Reynolds has been experimenting passionately with radically sustainable architecture using by-products of post-modern consumption. The inspiring documentary Garbage Warrior depicts Reynolds' eco-friendly architecture and his battle with the New Mexico legislature to create sustainable living test sites.

Garbage Warrior is an example of the many informative films featured in the new Earth Cinema Circle (ECC), a subscription-based DVD club that launched in early 2008.

Hosted by noted environmentalist and actor, Ed Begley, Jr, Earth Cinema Circleoffers a bimonthly selection of inspiring eco-friendly films, as well as exclusive membership in a community dedicated to improving the health of the planet. Every other month, ECC sends four films (including features, shorts and documentaries) that explore subjects such as wildlife and conservation, green movies about environmental choices, inspirational biographies about environmental heroes, videos about adventurous eco-travel and informative films that address global warming, pollution and species extinction.

Earth Cinema Circle screens more than 500 films every year to find hidden gems to send to subscribers, including:

The Queen of Trees: This award-winning documentary shows how the fig (queen) tree in Africa is life-sustaining for an entire range of species, from plants and insects to other animals.

Flip-Flotsam:This heartwarming documentary is about the unusual lifecycle of flip-flops along the East African coast. From the factory floors of Mombasa, where the colorful, rubber footwear is manufactured, to the vibrant Swahili island of Lamu where the shoes are worn thin, to the drainpipes that carry the discarded flops out to sea, the lifecycle of the ever-buoyant flops is proof that even shoes have more than just one life.

Papua New Guinea: Land of the Unexpected: A film that reminds us of the threat to our rainforests and coral reefs, it intertwines a beautiful culture of the local indigenous people with modern environmental organizations like the Wildlife Conservation Society and Conservation International.
